What Is Unclaimed Money?

When a company, solicitor or Government department tries to make a payment to you but cheque in the mail is returned, the bank account is invalid or they are unable to find you, the money may be classified as unclaimed.

Businesses are required by law to turn unclaimed funds over to one of nine government departments to be held in trust accounts until the money is claimed or it expires.

Examples of unclaimed money include old bank accounts, share dividends, share allocations for members of organisations who listed on the ASX (AMP, NRMA, Colonial Mutual, MBF, etc), life insurance, uncashed cheques, refunded deposits, plus many more.

The Recovery Process

Nationwide Claims Service has established a simple and efficient recovery process to ensure you get the money that is rightfully yours in the least possible time.
  • After we receive your Authority to Act, we send you a letter
  • You provide us with certified copies of documents to prove your identity and your connection to the funds to be recovered, and authorise us to act on your behalf.
  • We verify all your documentation and submit claims to the relevant Government departments.
  • The time it takes to process your claim will vary depending on where it is being held. A typical claim for funds being held in Australian Government accounts may take 4-6 weeks to process once we receive all your documentation.
  • Once processed, we will send you a cheque less our fees. We never ask for your bank account details.

What Does It Cost?

The all important question. We charge a percentage of the funds that are recovered. The second page of the letter we sent you is called an Authority to Act As Agent form and the percentage is highlighted in bold.

We have a sliding scale so the more funds we are recovering, the lower the percentage.

At no stage during the claim process, do you send us any money. We take our fees out of the funds that the government sends to us. This means that we only get paid when the claim is approved by the government.
